DIY Vanity Makeover

16 May

IMAG1928Anyone remember that old mirror that I turned into an earring holder? It was ok, but I really wasn’t crazy about it. I had three of these mirrors in the little vanity area of my bedroom and I craved something new. I mixed a little paint together to match one of the colors in my bed spread and I painted all three mirrors this nice maroon-like color. I had this whatnot that I picked up at the goodwill a few months ago and I decided to paint it too!

Lettuce, Fear and Growth

14 May

PhotoGrid_1368573148290

The Mesclun mix of lettuce really is growing! It’s doing so well that I planted more! It’s my dream to grow most of my food. I get so freaked out when I read the ingredients lists on packaged food or when I think about the chemicals that could be involved when growing produce on enormous farms. I try not to buy things that are not from the United States, but only because I only know that we regulate the amount of chemicals in our food and food from out of the country has different regulations. There was a time a few months ago when the citizens of the United States were instructed by the news/media not to buy orange juice from out of the country. Not because there were chemicals in it, but because the chemicals were higher than the amount that we legally allow into our food. It’s scary, really scary. I even worry about the safety of the food that I grow because I live in the city, with all the pollution and emissions and such.

Help Put A New Roof On A House That Needs It

5 May

This is Danny Proctor, close personal friend. If you recall I hosted a surprise birthday party for Danny a few months ago and wrote about throwing a party in a small space. Danny is in dire need of a new roof, please read his story and visit his GoFundMe site.

Raindrops keep falling on our heads! We have major leaks in our very old roof that require more than patching. We need a new roof ASAP!

Long story short: I had surgery for prostate cancer in 2006. No more cancer. In March 2009, my housemate and partner Daryl Pike was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. After chemo and then going into remission, he relapsed and required a stem cell bone marrow transplant in May 2011.

The good news: Daryl’s cancer is gone! The bad news: Daryl has been unemployed since May 2011 and I quit my full-time job three years ago to be his required 24/7 caregiver. We have no health insurance (we’ve exhausted all options, believe me) and very limited income. I’m working from home making what money I can.

A friend in the roofing biz gave us an estimate for a new roof. The $6,000 will cover the materials, labor etc plus any incidentals (such as gofuncme.com’s fees). We want to install a metal roof, which is recommended for a low-pitch roof, plus the economic value. Any mold, fungus etc. can be dangerous to Daryl’s new immune system so we can’t have rain literally dripping on his bed anymore. My friend has patched the roof twice, stopping the kitchen and bathroom leaks, but the leak over Daryl’s bed is still there.Between Daryl and myself, we have nearly 4,000 Facebook friends. A few dollars each would give us this roof that we desperately need.

Believe me, begging is a last-ditch effort. Please forgive us but know anything anyone can give would be a blessing.

Hodgepodge Dinner And A Brand New Apron

29 Apr

After drinking all night at a comedy and burlesque show where Screaming Names played until almost 3am, we woke up late and had a heavy lunch to help absorb the alcohol. We went to The Dog of Nashville where I had the special, an around the world dog. A Wisconsin beer brat with sauerkraut and spicy mustard, a light german beer that I can’t remember the name of and we shared chili cheese fries. Dinner was going to have to consist of something with some actual ingredients.

With A Little Imagination

12 Apr

I had these two pieces that I wanted to keep and reuse. I tucked them away together in hopes of inspiration coming to me at some point. I have had a week pretty void of creative impulses. I tried to make a piece of art on Wednesday and I ended up throwing it away. So it goes.

Today I remembered these pieces.

I’d worn the shirt before, but I’m not a big fan of long sleeves, and I’ve never worn the skirt. I decided to take the sleeves off of the shirt and then cut 9 inches off of the skirt. I like to wear my skirts high-waisted and short.

I visualized it in my head and went to work.

Spring Cleaning

9 Mar

Clean house clean mind, I am a firm believer in that statement. When I wake up to a messy house I feel defeated, and when I come home from work and see it I feel the same way. I won’t pretend that I’m the best housekeeper around but I’d like to think that my house isn’t generally as bad as I think it is either. A clean and organized house makes me feel less guilty about spending ridiculous amounts of time on my arts.
